Computer warehouse Group (CWG) Plc. was founded on February 1, 2005 to provide coordinating functions and shared services for 3 divisions-CWL Systems, DCC Networks and ExpertEdge Software. DCC Networks began operations in August 1991 as providers of VSAT, Metropolitan, Wide Area Area Network (VSAT), Metropolitan Area Network (Micro Wave Radio) and Local Area Networks (Structure Cabling) to corporate organizations. In September of the same year, CWL Systems was incorporated to undertake hardware projects. Based on existing demands in the area of software solutions, systems and training, another company, ExpertEdge software was acquired and later incorporated in October 1993.

Today, these three divisions function under the umbrella of the Computer Warehouse Group Plc. The group has evolved into an IT Powerhouse with a focus on enabling businesses through strategic partnerships with world class organizations. CWG has indeed grown over the years, establishing regional offices in West, East and Central Africa. CWG Ghana Limited (2003), CWG Uganda Limited (2010) and CWG Cameroon Limited (2012) respectively are handling the business interest of these regions. CWG is on a pan African drive to establish additional offices across major cities in sub Saharan Africa.

Brief Description

Africa’s leading Technology Company, Computer Warehouse Group Plc has been awarded the “Best ICT Company in CSR” for educational and intellectual development. The CSR Nigeria Award is the nation’s highest award in terms recognition accorded organisations that have exemplified themselves not only in their core functions, but have also given back to society enormously in areas of corporate social responsibility.

This award is coming at a time when CWG is about commencing the building of an ICT Park at the University Of Lagos, Nigeria where individuals shall be groomed in Hardware and software skills towards becoming professionals in ICT. The choice for Education by CWG as the core aspect of its social responsibility strategy is steeped in the company’s belief that the best way to create a technologically driven society is through the support and reward for technological expertise in Higher institutions across locations where the company Operates in Africa. In Nigeria, this is fully operational, with active plans to support some selected Higher institutions in Uganda and Ghana. There is also an active plan to support institutions in Abuja and Port Harcourt as well.
Speaking during the event, Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Olatunji Babafemi, CSR Nigeria Awards, said The CSR Awards was launched by Ctru concepts in order to recognize companies that have made a difference to the communities in which they are active through their CSR programmes, hence the body honors them for their outstanding, innovative and world-class products, services, projects and programs in different categories. According to him, Organisations being honoured at the event, have demonstrated leadership, sincerity and on-going commitment in incorporating ethical values, compliance with legal requirements, respect for individuals, involvement in communities and protection of the environment where they carry out their businesses. He also added that the long-term growth and profitability of companies are inextricably linked to the sustainability and well-being of the community.

In receiving this award for Computer Warehouse Group Plc, Olapeju Ayo Fisher, CWG’s Group Head, Human Resource, expressed her utmost thanks on behalf of the group, for the award and further explained CWG’s strategic belief in giving back to society. According to Mrs. Fisher, ‘CWG believes in giving back to the society with a clear focus on education as an integral aspect of her corporate identity. Education offers young individuals the best opportunity in life to realize their dreams and become the leaders of tomorrow. Hence as the Company expands beyond the shores of Nigeria, it is poised to replicate and fulfill these requirements in other African Countries’. She noted also the Company’s poise to develop skills through its in house academy, where skills are nurtured and developed in hardware, software and communications, with a bid to send them back to society as professionals so that they can also provide the acquired expertise to other organisations or even set up technological outfits on their own. Hence, she continues, ‘this award apart from being an honourable one, challenges us more as an organisation to continue the work of educational development. We hope it would also spur other organisations to support the further development of technology in Nigeria and by extension, the African Continent’.

Joseph Lutaaya, the best Computer Science student for the 2008/09 academic year has received a new Dell Laptop from the Computer Warehouse Group (CWG). Lutaaya, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.8 beat over 300 students to win the coveted award which comes with an opportunity to undertake a one year internship with CWG. Handing over the award to Lutaaya on Friday 18th November, 2011 at the College of Computing and Information Sciences, Michael Manzi, the CWG Country Manager said the company was committed to promoting education through rewarding excellence. ‘As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility, we shall focus on supporting the education and Information Technology (IT) sector.

We recognise the fact that the ICT market is resource constrained, but we want to inspire young talent and also bring professionalism into the market,’ he added. Manzi said the award will be annual and CWG will also reward the best Computer Science lecturers. This year, Paul Bakaki, Joab Ezra Agaba and Ronald Azairwe won the prizes. Prof. Ikoja Odongo, the College Principal thanked CWG for picking interest in Makerere University adding that this showed that the public has confidence in the quality of services the university gives its students. ‘We also pledge to continue partnering with several companies to meet our students’ educational and professional needs,’ he noted. Dr. Florence Tushabe, the Chair, Computer Science department, urged the students to emulate Lutaaya who only scored A+ and As in all his courses. Lutaaya dedicated his award to God, his family and friends and pledged to participate in all CWG activities.

He was also grateful to his lecturers for giving him the wisdom that enabled him win the award and also to the Madhvani Foundation for supporting his education.
