It will cost at least 1.80bn pesos (US$134mn) to repair the environmental damage caused by the spill at Grupo México's (GMex) Buenavista del Cobre copper mine, according to environment protection agency Profepa.

On August 6, 40,000m3 of copper sulfate acid solution spilled into the Bacanuchi and Sonora rivers, making it one of the worst environmental disasters in Sonora's history, local newspaper Excélsior reported.

Grupo México is expected to present a remediation or compensation plan later this month, Profepa said.

The company has also been ordered to permanently monitor water quality and assess the damage caused to the land, livestock and atmosphere – given the short, medium and long-term effects of the spill in the affected area, according to the national forestry commission Conafor.

Tighter environmental regulations could be imposed on Mexico's mining sector in response to the spill, the country's economy minister Ildefonso Guajardo told the lower house's economy committee.
