Thousands of commercial motorcycle riders (okada riders) in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Monday warned the government against banning their operations.

The riders stated that banning them from operating in the state could worsen youth unemployment and trigger insecurity.

The commercial motorcyclists, who spoke under the aegis of Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria, said the banning of motorcycles would do more harm than good to the government and society.

ACOMORAN Chairman in the state, Chief Shamsideen Adebayo, during a seminar organised for members tagged ‘Ride to Live,’said commercial

motorcycle sector ranked among the highest employers of labour in the country and one of the greatest contributors to the internally generated revenue of some states and local governments.

He said, “Banning of commercial motorcycles is not the solution to the problems associated with commercial motorcycling. At a point in this country, we had very serious problems with fake drugs. The pharmaceutical companies were not shut. War against fake drugs was initiated and fought seriously.”
