Kenya Airways Nears Telecom Business Launch

News » Sports

Kenya Airways (KQ) is poised to expand its business portfolio to incorporate a telecom business as it prepares to launch its mobile phone service. This will boost connectivity for its passengers looking for affordable roaming service.

“We are optimistic that our guest will soon start enjoying a service that will give them an affordable call rate in Kenya or roaming within the network,” Kenya Airways Boss, Titus Naikuni said.

The airline recently signed an agreement with Airtel, an Indian-based service provider, to host it the service. It will serve as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO).

KQ will provide a range of services including customer registration, billing, customer care and sim-card issuance. The launch is however pending regulatory approval.

The airline’s new venture will place it among the only four MVNO’s in Kenya. Other’s include; Finserve Africa, Zion Cell Kenya and Tangaza Pesa.

Kenya Airways currently flies to 38 African countries where intra-regional calling rates are more expensive than calling from Africa to US, Europe or India.
