President Goodluck  Jonathan has called on all ethno-religious groups in Nigeria to works towards peace and unity of the country, describing it as two necessary ingredients for attainment of genuine progress.

This is coming as the Federal Government assured that those that would be affected by the ongoing demolition exercise will be compensated and given alternative homes.

Jonathan stated this Sunrday when the Vice President Namadi Sambo and  Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senator Bala Mohammed led residents of FCT to pay him Sallah homage

He emphasised  that for the country to move forward, it must follow the footsteps of  the founding fathers who" believed that it must progress in an atmosphere of peace and unity".

"I call for more prayers from religious leaders and all Nigerians for greater peace and unity among all Nigerians," he said.

"Nigeria as a unique country whose role in global affairs is cut out by her uniqueness, and the security and other challenges the country is currently facing constitute a phase in its evolution," he added.

The President while commending the delegation, comprising mainly of Muslim faithful for the Sallah homage, described the visit as another good platform to demonstrate to other Nigerians and the world that we are one.

Earlier,  Sambo pledged the support and loyalty of the FCT Muslim community to  Jonathan's administration, stressing that the Federal Government’s transformation agenda was on course.

Also, Bala Mohammed had set the event in motion by introducing members of the delegation and presentation of a huge Sallah greeting card by the Vice President and the himself ( FCT Minister) to the President.

The minister  who later  played host to some residents of the FCT after the Eid prayers, in his official residence at Life Camp used the opportunity to disclose that  palliative measures have been put in place to cushion the effect of the demolition exercises on the victims as he solicited for their understanding in this matter.
