BHP Billiton Breaks Annual Output Record

News » Sports

Global resources firm, BHP Billiton, had posted record output at 12 of its operations, resulting in a 9 percent surge in group production in the year to June this year, CEO Andrew Mackenzie said on Wednesday.

“Our focus on productivity has resulted in a significant improvement in operating performance at each of our major businesses this year,” Mackenzie said.

“Western Australia Iron Ore and Queensland Coal annual production exceeded guidance, with both rising by more than 20 per cent as we delivered more tonnes from existing infrastructure and growth projects ahead of schedule,” Mackenzie said, adding that at Escondida, an increase in mill throughput had offset copper grade decline.

Escondida is a copper-gold-silver miner located in the dry, northern Atacama Desert of Chile, the vast South American country.

Mackenzie made these comments as the company released its trading update for the year to end-June in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

He said the company is likely to continue to generate group production growth of 16 percent over the 24 months to the end of the 2015 financial year.

According to Mackenzie, in petroleum, the general advance in productivity is likely to support stronger iron ore, copper and metallurgical coal volumes.

“We will remain focused on value over volume as we prioritise our brownfield development options and consider the next phase of portfolio simplification,” Mackenzie said.
