Members of Anambra State House of Assembly were on Tuesday thrown into confusion at the news of the kidnap of Chairman, House Committee on Health, Emeka Aniebonam, who represents Onitsha South 1 State Constituency.

He was reportedly kidnapped by unknown gunmen in the late hours of Monday.

Aniebonam, a medical doctor with a flourishing hospital in Onitsha, and was elected on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), was kidnapped in the clinic at Fegge, Onitsha.

According to eyewitness, Aniebonam was attending to his patients in his private clinic when three men operating in a Honda Accord with tinted glass, stormed the area armed with AK 47 rifles.

They went straight to the lawmaker’s office and whisked him away in their car.

The source further disclosed that after the suspects arrived at the hospital premises, they parked their car and went into the Out Patients Department (OPD), held everyone on gunpoint as they whisked their target away.

“We were in the hospital when three men drove into the hospital in an ash coloured Honda Accord, with tinted glass.

“Three of them came out with AK47 each, they entered into the OPD, surrendered all the patients there, while the remaining two went straight into the doctor’s office and took him away. They did not fire even a single shot”, the source said.

He also said that immediately after the operation, people at the hospital reported the matter officially at the Fegge Police Station, adding that the policemen on duty sent signals to their various outstations on the incident.

However, the kidnappers have not opened negotiations with the family of the lawmaker as at the press time, even as his colleagues at the Assembly were was thrown into confusion when the news of the kidnap was broken to them.

“As I am talking to you, the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Mrs. Chinwe Nwebili, and indeed all Honourable members, are saddened by the act and called on security agencies to intensify manhunt for the rescue of Dr. Aniebonam, who has been a very strong member and voice in the chambers”, he said.

When contacted, the Area Commander in Onitsha, Benjamin Wordu, confirmed the incident, and said the command has mapped out strategies on how to track the kidnappers and rescue the lawmaker unhurt.
