Akpabio Floors Opponent In Appeal Court

By Uzoma Nzeagwu, Awka.

THE Akwa Ibom State governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has once again been confirmed duly elected governor of the state, as an Appeal Court, at the weekend in Calabar, struck out an appeal by the governorship candidate of the Progressive Action Congress (PAC), Mr. Sunday Ibanga Obot and his party against Akpabio and 15 others.

This brings to about seven the total number of victories Akpabio has secured in the tribunal and courts since he became governor in 2007.

The same court will on September 13 deliver judgement in an appeal the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governorship candidate, Chief James Udoedeghe, instituted against Akpabio on the election.

Similarly, Senator Ita Enang’s senatorial election was on Thursday upheld in Uyo by the Election Petition Tribunal.

The tribunal had earlier on July 14, 2011 dismissed the petition of Obot against Akpabio, as it lacked merit and was abandoned. But Obot dragged the matter to the Appeal Court in Calabar on three grounds.

These were the issues counsel to PAC, led by Mr. Sylvanus Udofia and counsel to Obot raised in their appeal.

However, counsel to Akpabio, led by Mr. Duro Adeyemi and five others, raised objection saying, “The issues they (appellants) raised were new issues that were not canvassed at the tribunal.” - Nigerian news, headline news, naija, Nigeria, West Africa
