The negotiations between the Federal Government and organised labour over the issues in the power sector have again been postponed to Tuesday next week as the government intensifies efforts to resolve the crises with NUPENG.
The negotiations have however been taken over by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Anyim Pius Anyim after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) expressed doubt at the capacity of the Ministry of Labour to drive the process that would resolve the issues in contention.

The President General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Peter Esele briefing newsmen after the closed door meeting at the Office of the SGF said talks are still ongoing with both sides misinformed about the demands of the other side.

He expressed the readiness of the labour movement to work with the government to reach a middle ground.

“Our position on the issues at stake is very clear. We are not telling you not to privatize or not to carry out the reforms. For you to do this, the severance packages and conditions of service should be provided. If this is done, we do not have any problem,” he said.

Esele added that the meeting was just a preliminary one where points of references were presented by both sides.

On the proposed strike which the labour movements threatened to embark on over the issues in the power sector, the TUC President said “we are still talking.”

It would be recalled that the NLC had last week clarified that the threat of strike was pegged to the failure of the government to commence meaningful negotiations over the issues in the sector. Negotiations commenced last week at the instance of the Labour Minister, Chief Emeka Wogu.

The meeting was attended by the SGF, Chief Pius Anyim Pius, Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agary, NLC Deputy President, Comrade Promise Adewusi, TUC President, Comrade Peter Esele, TUC Secretary General, Comrade John Kolawole, Secretary General of the National Union of Electricity Employers (NUEE), Comrade Joe Ajaero and others.
