Vice-president, Namadi Sambo, on Saturday revealed that three major oil blocks have been discovered at the shores of Lake Chad where the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) is presently prospecting for petroleum.

Interestingly, one of the major blocks, he said, is located in within the Maiduguri metropolis.

Sambo, who disclosed this at the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Garbai Alamin II Elkanemi, during his official visit to the state on Saturday, said proper drilling exploration would start before the end of the first quarter of this year.

He said: “Your Royal Highness, I am pleased to inform you that so far we have identified three major oil blocks and one of these blocks includes the area of Maiduguri town itself.

“Probably, even where I stand here in the royal palace there may be an oil well. “Our plan is to commence actual drilling exploration test by the first quarter of this year or by first quarter 2014 in some of the sights. This year, Mr. President has approved the appropriation of $100 million for this work.”

The monarch, earlier in his welcome speech, has called the federal government’s attention to the slow-pace nature of the exploration exercise in the shores of the Lake Chad, as well as the need for the government to renew its commitment to the development of agricultural potential of the Chad basin.

He also called on the federal government to strengthen its borders and embrace the current Boko Haram ceasefire offer “and make the most out of it so that Borno state would regain its accolade as the Home of Peace.”
