January 15, 1966 - July 29, 1966: Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironisi
 Aguiyi-Ironisi over threw democratic president Nnamdi Azikiwe in a coup de etat.


July 29, 1966 - July 25, 1975: General Yakubu Gowon

While Ironsi was staying at Government House in Ibadan, northern troops led by Major Theophilus Danjuma and Captain Martin Adamu stormed the building, seized Ironsi and his host, Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, and subsequently had the two men stripped naked, flogged and beaten, and finally shot. General Yakubu Gowon becomes military head of state and rules till 1975


July 25, 1975 - February 13, 1976: General Murtala Mohammed

While Gowon was attending an OAU summit in Kampala, a group of officers led by Colonel Joe Nanven Garba announced his overthrow. The coup plotters appointed Brigadier Murtala Muhammad as head of the new government.


February 13, 1976 -: General Olusegun Obasanjo
Murtala Muhammed was killed along with his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Akintunde Akinsehinwa, on February 13, 1976 in an abortive coup attempt led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka, when his car was ambushed while en route to his office at Dodan BarracksLagos. He was succeeded by the Chief of Staff, Supreme HQ Olusegun Obasanjo.
